Each year since 2004, IPPN has sponsored a Bursary Award. The purpose of these Awards is to enable Principals take time out from school to conduct research into an area of relevance to Principals generally and to report their findings. This research is used to inform IPPN policy development and strategy.

Previous Bursary Award winners and their chosen research topic were:

2006 - Cóilín O Coigligh and Gerry O'Brien visited Australia in March 2007 to work with primary schools to research and develop resources for a Newly Appointed Principals Support Pack and to research Professional Competencies for School Leadership. 2005 - Siobhán Cartúir and Mary McGarry visited schools in Ontario and reported back on Primary Schools in an Online Community and School Self Evaluation

2004 - Helen O'Sullivan and Marie Dunphy who conducted a study visit to New Zealand on "Leadership Development for the Learning Community
