Three-fifths of five schools are financially worse off now than they were when the recession began as voluntary contributions plummet and the Government cuts funding to cover schools running costs, according to a survey by the Irish Primary Principals’ Network (IPPN).

22 December 2011 - Give a child a book for Christmas, urges IPPN

The Irish Primary Principals’ Network (IPPN), the professional body representing over 3,350 primary school leaders, has urged parents to give their children a book for Christmas to help cultivate a love of reading.

Seán Cottrell, IPPN Director, said giving children electronic or paperback books is an investment in their early-stage development, with strong knock-on implications for character formation, reading and comprehension abilities in later life.

15 December 2011- IPPN Statement: Small & DEIS Schools

“The Irish Primary Principals Network stated today that Principals are deeply dismayed at both the range and severity of the proposed cuts to primary education.”

“The government appears to be deliberately squeezing small schools out of existence and at the same time removing hundreds of teachers from schools in Disadvantaged Areas.”

“In a survey conducted by IPPN over the last two days, we have found that 470 schools are due to lose 730 teachers over the next 3 years.”

“IPPN stated that its international research proves that there are other ways of addressing small schools without forcing school closures. Canada, Australia, Finland have rationalized the administration and management of small schools in remote areas, without withdrawing schools from their communities.
