Proposed Strike Action – School Secretaries & Caretakers

As the professional network for primary school leaders, IPPN recognises the vital role that school secretaries and caretakers play in our school communities. Their commitment and professionalism help to ensure the smooth and effective running of the school and a safe environment for children, staff, parents and others who visit the school. Their contribution to school life is hugely valued by school leaders.
IPPN has been notified by Forsa of the commencement of strike action by school secretaries and caretakers, with effect from Thursday 28th August, in furtherance of a claim that secretaries and caretakers should be admitted to the Single Public Service Pension Scheme. While IPPN has no industrial relations remit, we trust that a positive resolution to this matter can be achieved and that strike action can be avoided, in the best interests of all parties.
It is IPPN’s hope that schools can reopen after the summer break with all school personnel in role, working together to create an environment where quality teaching and learning can take place.
Should the strike action proceed, it is important that schools ascertain if the school’s secretary and/or the school’s caretaker will be observing the strike action. When this information has been established, it should be shared with the Board of Management so that the Board, as employer, can ensure appropriate arrangements are put in place to manage the situation in the school. The Board can seek advice from its patron and/or management body in this regard.
As always, the Leadership Support service is available to the principals and deputy principals of all IPPN member schools.
